Review & Swatches: Marc Jacobs Beauty Highliner Gel Eye Crayon in Brown(Out)

I recently got a deluxe sample size of Marc Jacob Beauty Highliner Gel Eye Crayon in #54 Brown(Out) and it's described as a "bronze with shimmer." I would actually say that it's a medium brown that leans more on the warm side with gold glitter and a bit of red shimmer. The full size retails for $25 and contains 0.01 oz of product.

The packaging is similar to the full size, but the full sized product is obviously longer. You dispense more product by twisting the bottom part.

I've always swatched one or two shades of the Highliner Gel Eye Crayons in stores, but I didn't know if I actually wanted to spend $25 to get it since I already had a lot of the Urban Decay liners. Brown(Out) was a 100 point perk at Sephora and I immediately got it the day I got the new point perk selections.

The formula is so smooth and glides on so easily. It's opaque with just one layer too. For some reason, the SA I talked to said that it was a matte brown and so I was surprised that there was glitter. I wouldn't say that it's a chunky glitter, but it's definitely not finer like shimmer.

The product is so blendable that you can even sheer it out to make it into a cream shadow / base. In the above two pictures, I used it as an eyeshadow and also lined the outer corners on the upper and lower lashlines. I even tightlined the upper lash line to make my lashes look thicker at the base.

The longevity of this product is amazing. I swatched it on my arm at night and I forgot about it. It was still perfect in the morning and wouldn't come off with my regular Eucerin face wash and I had to use my Body Shop Shiso Cleansing Oil. Some extra elbow grease needed to be used to remove it too. I also wore it on my eyes for a full 15 hours and it still didn't budge. It held up on my waterline pretty well too inside for the inner corners.

Final Thoughts: I wish I had gotten this sooner! Right after I wore this for the first time, I knew I had to get more. Fortunately, Marc Jacobs Beauty is celebrating their first anniversary and with every order using the code "BIRTHDAY," they're including deluxe samples of Brown(OUT) AND another shade in Blacquer along with a deluxe sample of a Lust for Lacquer in Kissability (VALID UNTIL AUGUST 31). I ended up buying a full sized Highliner Gel Eye Crayon (Luna)Tic. I absolutely recommend Brown(Out) to everyone. It's so versatile and the formula is probably one of the best eye liner formulas I have ever tried.

  1. This looks so pretty on you! I loved how you smudged it out on your lid as an eyeshadow :)

  2. Thank you! Being able to smudge an eyeliner like that is one of my semi requirements for a pencil eyeliner now. It's also one of go-to looks on my lazy days! hahaha
